Should I do a First Look?

Updated: Apr 18, 2022

If you are unsure about what a first look is or you aren't sure if you want to do one on your wedding day check out my helpful tips below!

Before we jump into whether or not you should do a first look let me explain exactly what this is for those who may not know. Traditionally, the first time a couple would see each other for the first time is when they meet at the altar for the first time. A "First Look" is when a couple chooses to see each other for the first time before the ceremony. In my opinion, I could not recommend a First Look more. They ensure you will get the most out of your wedding photos. Below are a few reasons why a First Look is so important on your wedding day.

  1. Many people plan their wedding ceremony around sunset. Not only is this the best lighting, but the weather is usually the best at this time (not too hot or too cold) and therefore your guests will be the most comfortable. If your ceremony ends as the sun sets this means it will be dark following the ceremony. Ideally, you want there to be daylight when photographing the most important pictures from your wedding day. It will ensure the photos come out looking the best they can.

  2. Not doing a first look means that couple's portraits, bridal party photos, and family formals will all have to take place right after your ceremony. This means you, your family, and your bridal party will miss the majority of cocktail hour. I hate to see my couples miss out on the chance to welcome all their guests, grab a bite to eat and relax after their ceremony.

  3. Having these photos take place right after the ceremony may confuse some people. They may forget that they are needed for photos and head straight to cocktail hour. This always leads to people having to hunt them down, and waste time when taking photos.

  4. I always suggest that right after your wedding ceremony just the two of you take a few minutes to yourself to soak in the moment and spend some much-needed quality time together. If you don't do a first look, you may not have enough time to take this special moment for just the two of you.

  5. Your family and bridal party will be sober when taking photos! No one will have the chance to grab a few too many drinks at happy hour before showing up with a stained dress!

  6. If your ceremony takes place in a different location than your cocktail hour and reception it is important to do a first look. Fitting all of these important photos in AND traveling from place to place will not leave enough time to take all of the photos you will want to look back on.

  7. Having a first look means you will have more time with your loved ones. If your ceremony isn't taking place until 6:00 pm, that means you will not get to spend the majority of your wedding day with the person you want to celebrate with the most!

  8. First looks will help calm your nerves. It will give you a chance to talk as a couple and be comforted by the person who knows you best.

  9. You can react naturally. A lot of people feel an immense amount of pressure when everyone's eyes are on them as they watch their partner walk down the aisle. Seeing your partner for the first time in private is much more intimate and less nerve-wracking.

  10. Once you are done with the ceremony all of the most important photos are done! This means you can finally relax and enjoy spending time with your guests!
