Every-time I travel I have different plans, goals and itineraries. The one thing that remains constant is the desire to meet and get to know the locals. During my time in Ethiopia, I was lucky enough to meet many members of the Deaf community. I was working alongside many Deaf children who were overflowing with personality. When photographing them I aimed to show off their personalities as much as I could. I had the opportunity to become close with interpreters, a Deaf Audiologist and Deaf shop owners. When you browse through this page I hope you can see the unbreakable bonds of the Ethiopian Deaf community.
One of the best parts of being a photographer is collaborating with others. Everyone has a unique style and a different set of skills. No matter who you work with, they have knowledge that can be shared. Getting advice from another artist and collaborating is always an experience I will cherish. Not only does working with others allow you to be more creative, it's a great chance to share equipment and work with something new. Using different tools than I'm used to forces me to try new things and helps me gain knowledge without breaking the bank!
Being a photographer gives me the opportunity to work with many different clients. All of these people come from different backgrounds, need photos for varying reasons and have distinct visions. I love working with people and getting a sense of what they want out of a photograph. Combining their ideas with my technique always results in a unique outcome. I love incorporating my client's desires and surprising them with a photo they never expected to receive.
As a photographer, I get to help people grow their brands. Musicians are always fun to work with. Not only are they artists as well, but they always have props that help to create stunning environmental portraits. I love shooting photos with an artist's guitar, microphone, violin, etc. These items really help the viewer get to know the subject on a more personal level. Collaborating with a musician requires a photographer to really get to know their subject. I am expected to learn about the music they create before the shoot so I can properly portray the feelings they are trying to provoke.
Working with couples is different than any other client. Having two people on a shoot means there is more opportunity for different visions and wants. Every couple is unique and learning to work with different people is key to shooting couples photography. Not every couple is comfortable shooting in a very public area, or being too PDA. Learning how to successfully take couples photos while making sure all of your clients are happy is a skill that is constantly evolving. Sending these clients their edited photos knowing they will be looked back on for years is always motivation to make sure each shot is perfect.
